Before Buying Anything, New or Used
I strongly suggest you personally observe
the designer and or manufacture (not just the company's test pilots) flying
there product at altitude
(not just hovering around) many many times before you invest your money
n possibly your life in their helicopter...
If the designer or manufacture comes up with ANY excuse why they don't personally fly there craft, the writing is on the wall, READ it n move on to another manufacture that has the confidence in there craft to fly it above 100 feet regularly.
And the same goes for used/experimental helicopters. If the owner/builder does NOT have the confidence in his craft to give you full flight demonstration (autos, hover autos, quick stops, flights at altitude) the writing is once again on the wall, READ it and move on.
I have personally seen the manufactures n used
helicopter owners that fly there craft at
altitude n I have also seen the ones that
don't fly there craft more than a few feet off the ground. Statistically,
one is LOTS less likely to kill than the other.
Remember, the life you save
is Yours....
Chicken
Hawk is a story of a young boy that goes thru US Army Warrant
Officer
Flight School becoming both a helicopter pilot and a man. The story starts
in the late 60 in the USA, than onto VietNam
and
back. The author Bob Mason tells how he almost washed out of pre flight
school but was allowed to take the "Hell Month" over again (6o days of
Hell Month) and almost a year later earned his wing as a Warrant
Officer. He tells how he and many other set up one of the first Air Cavalry
Divisions (perhaps the first, I can't remember). Any way, I enjoyed
Bob's book so much I have actually read 3 times so far and most likely
will again. It is a great book for any one fascinated with the whirling
wing/helicopter and or VietNam helicopter aviation. If you are forgetful
like me, you can enjoy it 3 times for only $8.76 thru Amazon.com. Click

Hi, Glenn,
I want to congratulate you on the fine job you do
on your web site. It's enjoyable reading
about some of the latest developments in kit-built/home-built rotorcraft.
I'm writing you because I have been trying to locate information on a "kit-built" helicopter that was being developed several years ago. To the best of my recollection, it was called the "WindStar". The development team was based in either Tucson or Phoenix, AZ. Most importantly, there were several interesting features on this aircraft.
1st First of all, it had either a 4 or 5 bladed main rotor system, that used a composite rotor hub.
2nd The engine was a heavily modified Porsche-designed 6-cylinder.
3rd And, it also had provisions for a "solid fuel Emergency engine", to enhance it's autorotational performance.
Back in about 1988, I wrote for, and received, a
sales brochure from the company.
Unfortunately, one day at work, someone decided they wanted the brochure
more than I did. I have not been able to find anything on them since
then.
I was hoping that either you, or one of your readers
might have some information on this
design. I realize that it has not been produced (as far as I
know), but I have been hoping to
obtain the specs on the rotor system and transmission.
I appreciate any and all info you might be able to provide.
Thank you for your time, and effort,
Sincerely,
Greetings:
Many of us who enjoy rotary wing flight, got hooked on it as a kid watching an old 1950's TV show called Whirlybirds. It was a 30 minute TV adventure show that aired in the late 1950's for a few years, and starred Chuck and PT, two helicopter jocks that found themselves and their Bell 47G & Bell 47J in different adventures each week.
For many years I have tried to find a copy of any of the shows. Recently all episodes were donated to the Library of Congress TV Archives. Individual viewing is hard to set up.
However, I did track down a source for 10 episodes. Each episode is available for a modest price. They are available from National Helicopter Services, P.O. Box 17150, Encino, CA 91416-7150. Phone: (818) 345-5222, Web Site: http://www.nationalhelicopter.com.
Company contact is Richard Hart. Go to the Quicktime section on their site to see the episode titles, and to also download a small Quicktime sample movie of the show. They also have a Whirlybirds jacket patch for sale.
If you want a detailed listing
of the Whirlybird episodes, visit an excellent site that is totally devoted
to all Bell 47 information, links , etc. The web address is:
http://cellmath.med.utoronto.ca/B47/Bell_47.html
National Helicopter provided the real pilots and ships that were used during the filming of the show back in the 1950's.
Enjoy!

Hello, my name is John "Dane" Bumpus. I Live in the metro Phoenix area.
I have been dreaming of building and owning my own Helicopter for
the last 15 years or so. It started by driving past Rotorway here in town.
Needless to say they have always been a personal favorite. Every time I
have the opportunity I drive by (like yesterday). Now after getting a little
further
along in life the dream is closer to becoming a reality. After much
research I feel like Rotorway is at the very top of the kit copter arena.
Not to mention parts, service and flight school all housed at one facility
here in my own home town. I would greatly appreciate any un-biased feedback
on various kits, however I've pretty much made up my mind.
They are rock solid... :-)
thank you
John "Dane" Bumpus
Can anyone supply me with either the web site or e-mail address of the manufacturers of fleck rotor blades, many thanks.
Best regards,
Robin L'Homme.
Poland's worst helicopter air disaster occurred today when a Jet Ranger crashed into a large cemetery early this morning as the Ranger was on traffic patrol. Polish aviation authorities fear the death toll is likely to climb past the 326 bodies discovered so far as the search and rescue workers continue digging.
Up Date - Nov. 26th, 1999
Authorities advise that the body count from the Bell Jet Ranger Crash
in Poland is expected to exceed 1,647 victims according to reliable sources.
Authorities advised that the number of victims has been calculated by counting
markers left at the crash site at the time of impact, which correspond
with each victim found so far. However, the Polish Aviation Authorities
warned that the count of victim(s) may be higher, as they have discovered
during the Search and Rescue operation, that some of the victim(s), who
were burned beyond recognition, were
found pre-packaged in glass containers and found on top of other victims.
Polish Aviation Authorities also advised that due to the exhaustive
nature of the victim recovery process, the search for additional victims
will not exceed beyond the boundaries of the fence
line surrounding the 26 acre cemetery.
Up Date - Nov. 26th, 1999
After 22 days of Search and Recovery at Poland's worst helicopter air disaster site, Polish Aviation Authorities announced this morning, with remorse, that the body count has exceeded the 1,647 victims recovered so far, not including the victim(s) that were unidentifiable.
Authorities stated that the crash site Rescue and Recovery supervisor,
Vladimir Whoelski, a hero in their eyes, refused to stop searching and
discovered additional victims. Polish Aviation Authorities announced
that the grim task of Search and Recovery at the site has unearthed (1)
ARK and (2) T-Rex's, plus approximately 70,000 additional victims of
Chinese descent. Polish Aviation Authorities announced astonishment
and admiration of Supervisor Vladimir Whowelski for his determination to
recover all victims.
Upon interviewing Supervisor Whowelski about the additional 70,000 victims, he just stood there scratching his head stating over and over "I can't understand why they're all burnt up?"
Polish Aviation Officials confided that the investigation into the identity of the unidentified victim(s) is continuing as they have sent an inquiry to the Mason Jar Company in the United States.
Chinese Authorities advised that when all 70,000 Chinese Nationals are recovered and returned to China (at Poland's expense), they will be buried with honors.
On a related note, Chinese Authorities in the same area are investigating reports that their largest and oldest Cemetery has mysteriously disappeared in a large sink hole.
We have just finished the 2nd prototype M80 helicopter. During the next week or two we need to do some preliminary testing before the official ground testing procedure can start. We have put a new "photo gallery" on the site to show how the new prototype looks like. I'm sure you'll agree we have something to be proud of.

First reply: I know of one kit Rinke sold to a buddy of mine. Its sitting
in his basement in the
same crate it was shipped in. WoW, don't like to hear
this, wonder why.
Second reply: rinki turbine kit does not work, the starting system is
no good. JOE RINKE has
sold 4 to 5 kit, BUT HE IS NO HELP TO HIS CUSTORS. NONE RINKE KITS
ARE FLYING. WoW,
don't like to hear this eather.

Hi Glenn,
Before you post GET YOUR FACTS CORRECT!!
Joe Rinke....
P.S. Maybe they are afraid to fly the mini-5 with or without a turbine because so many are dying in it!
Who every is complaining have them call and I will get it Flying for them, mine Fly's Great!! 200+ Hours. I will help any way I can!
Hi Glenn,
Also, I would like you to know that there are 23 kits out and about in the United States, as well as overseas. There are only four, that we are aware of, that are not flying,
As far as accidents are concerned, with our turbine packages only
one has been reported to have crashed, and this was by a gentleman named
FB, who lives in the state of ???. It was reported that FB had less
than 30 hours in helicopters and has not yet received his license for rotor
craft. It was also reported that the turbine continued
to run even after the crash. And thirdly, it was also reported by
him, that he had just finished the installation of his mast support system,
and for some unknown reason the cyclic and the collective created a bind
and caused the aircraft to roll.
As for your first reply: if this gentleman has a turbine that has not yet been installed, or does not have any damage from shipping, I would be more than happy to repurchase this kit from him after inspection. That is of course if it is for sale, I have had two calls regarding purchase of them in the last four days.
Sincerely,
Joseph Rinke

Hi Glenn:
With regard to the Rinke Turbine kit, I'd like to make a couple of comments for you and your web patrons.
* I've never met Joe, but I've talked with him many times about turbines,
his Puma design, and his M-500 conversion. I can
say without question, Joe Rinke knows turbines. Also, it has
been my experience that Joe will not "sugar coat" the
subject...he is quick to point out the pros and cons of such conversions.
* I've been in contact with a gentleman who is selling his Rinke-converted Mini-500. His partner in the project is getting a boat, and so they decided to sell it. After speaking with him on the phone and receiving his e-mail, I can tell you that it's clear that the Rinke mod is anything but junk. His is flying beautifully, and he will send a video to anyone truly interested in dropping the $50k req'd for purchase. I've attached his e-mail and a link to the pictures so that you may display them on your web site, they truly are beautiful pictures.
Since the demise of RHCI, prices on a 2nd-hand Mini have dropped to below $20k on average. I see the Rinke modification as a very good way to give your investment back some resale value. Many have said the Mini flies respectably well and that it's only real caveat is the power plant. The Rinke turbine mod, it seems to me, can turn your hangar queen into a viable, real helicopter, with real resale value.
Thanks again for a great website.
P.S. Rather than stuff 1 meg worth of pictures in your mail
box, I put the zip file on my web site for you to download at your
leisure: http://www.jobie.com/m500turb.zip

John,
Thanks for the interest in the helicopter, we believe that we have
put together one of the very best, and well built Mini500's around
anywhere. The turbine installation is working perfectly for us and makes
this helicopter perform like none of the others. Hope you can see
in more detail this pretty helicopter. If this is what you are looking for
and you would like to see some video please let me know and we will get
some to you.

Until than, please realize, I already contribute 10/20 hours a week hosting/editing SHnPGIE n I personally feel it only fair that the people that enjoy n profit from this site should also contribute something to help pay SHnPGIE's out of pocket expenses. So, needing cash for SHnPGIE I started selling a few things to help supplement SHnPGIE's contributions.
So, if you're purchasing a book from Amazon, now or in the future, by clicking thru SHnPGIE, we will get a small (about $0.50) commission. Or if you use telephone cards, by purchasing from SHnPGIE, you will save a buck n SHnPGIE will make a buck since (we sell them for a dollar less than at your local convenience store). So if you have the need for one of the two for mentioned items, please click on the icon above.
It all adds up n will help maintain n perhaps allow me to cover additional helicoptering events, thus giving YOU more good stuff on helicopters to read n quality fotos to dream on n help SHnPGIE be on the WWWeb one more year.
It's all up to you, the reader if
SHnPGIE is on the WWWeb after September 1999.
Right now I feel like the beggars
we C on the PBS TV channels from time to time, they are annoying aren't
they, sorry.
