As Rippley would say, in this bomb shaped container is a one man Helicopter,
believe it or not.
The US Marine core commissioned the Hiller Corporation to develop a collapsible helicopter that could be dropped from a orbiting fighter to a downed Marine fighter pilot.
The plan was for the fighter to provide cover to the downed pilot after it dropped the under wing mounted pod/helicopter. This would enable the pilot 5 or so minuets needed to safely assemble his get-a-way car/helicopter.
Pretty dam cool isn't it. Lots of distractions in the background, so
ya gotta look close
at what is n what is not the RotorCycle.
Seems like it was powered by a Mc Culloch 2 cycle power plant? With NO back preasure/tuned pipe, no wonder the MC motor got a bad reputation to live down.
Take a good look at this foto of a foto. This RotorCycle has a elevator just forward of the tail rotor mounted on the tail boom in this foto n look at the bump just rear the MR shaft, Hum wonder what the bump is.
As I said, great idea n they made a total of 27 of them.
But
since it took the Core 5o extra flight hours to train the fighter joc
to pilot the RotorCycle,
the Core bagged the idea.
Another fine example of
Our Tax Dollars at work
Wouldn't you agree.
